Our Story.
Established in 2021 Rebuild Health was created to increase the physical activity levels of the Afro-Caribbean community within the UK by focusing on long-term behavior change. This is done by running events, offering 1-2-1 support and understanding barriers all while keeping culture in mind!
Our Purpose.
Empowering and inspiring you to keep moving forward
Our Mission
Building a healthy, active, and empowered future for the Black community.
Our Values
-
Health is our wealth.
Health is our ultimate goal. We aim to improve and prioritise the physical and mental health of our community in a way that’s informed, accessible and realistic.
-
Let’s get moving.
Focusing on building movement into and around our busy, everyday lives is a lifeline for our community. We want to do this in a way that’s fun, achievable and sustainable.
-
Knowledge is power.
Access to learning breaks down barriers and opens the door to new opportunities. We want to create a culture that recognises the importance of making informed lifestyle choices to create positive health outcomes.
-
We rise by lifting others.
We are supportive, encouraging and uplifting.
Through showing kindness to each other, we create a culture of growth, positivity and purpose that creates a chain reaction throughout our community.
Why we were created!
Within the UK physical inactivity is associated with 1 in 6 deaths, and annually costs £7.4 billion. As a whole, we are 20% less active than we where in the 1960s but the Afro-Caribbean community is one of the groups who are least active.
In addition, the Afro-Caribbean community are more likely to have type 2 diabetes and our obesity rates are staggering! But still, no one is addressing this and understanding the nuances of the culture!
Rebuild Health aims to support those in our community who aren’t active, are inconsistent with activity, or are just getting back into active!
Founder
Hi, I’m Jodine and I’m the founder of Rebuild Health. I’m a Chartered Sports & exercise psychologist working in both the sports and exercise space. I currently work with athletes to improve their performance and I manage a face to face projects for those with arthritis focused on creating long-term change. I've spent many years studying to understand the mind and how it impacts behaviour and how we navigate our surroundings.
Physical activity wasn’t something that I saw around me every day in the black community. Outside of my love for track and field, my mum wasn’t moving much nor where my family and the families of the people around me. The black community may have plenty of stories about taking part in sport during school or hearing stories of our parents taking part in netball, football or other sports, but how much of that has translated into our lifestyle as we’ve grown older.
In my family alone I’ve seen diabetes take people’s life, stress related health issues, arthritis, joint problems and excessive weight gain. This is a story similar to others within the black community. I’ve also seen the benefits that physical activity and looking after your body have both mentally and physically.
My mission for Rebuild Health is Huge but I know it’s possible. I am passionate about creating change to the physical inactivity levels in the black community. I believe I can use my skills as a psychologist and connect with other professionals to make sure I support as many people as possible. I understand the needs will be varied across the community and those connections will be vital to creating change.
